Juneau Alaska Salmon Fishing
Juneau Alaska Salmon Fishing is by far some of the best Salmon Fishing you will find anywhere. Located within the harbored waters of the Alaskan inland passage our waters are a refuge for millions of salmon migrating through our waters each year.
Juneau is situated on the Pacific Ocean and most of our fishing is done within 30 minutes of town. Our waters are protected from the inclement weather and most summer days it is like fishing a large lake.
In our waters we have many different types of salmon including:
- King Salmon – Chinook
- Silver Salmon – Coho
- Pink Salmon – Humpies
- Sockeye Salmon – Reds
- Chum Salmon – Dogs
In the same waters we also fish for Pacific Halibut, Ling Cod and various species of bottom fish.
The most famous of our Salmon is the King Salmon. These are the largest salmon in our waters and we can get fish in the 30-40 pound range, or larger. These fish are very powerful and put up a terrific battle. These fish tend to take their fight to the bottom and make multiple runs when hooked.
What Coho Salmon give up in size they make up in heart. These fish can grow to 20 pounds or more with most in the 10-15 pound range. They are typically found in our waters from August to October. Unlike King Salmon, Coho salmon take their battle to the air with multiple jumps and acrobatics. Like the King Salmon, Coho salmon are excellent eating.
Pinks, Sockeye and Chum are all smaller salmon and are all excellent table fair. In the Pacific waters these fish are chrome bright and to the untrained eye are hard to distinguish between each other. Once these fish reach their spawning ground in fresh water is where they get their names. Pink Salmon grow a large hump on their backs (Humpies), Sockeye Salmon turn a bright red color (Reds) and Chum salmon grow large canine teeth in the front of their mouth (Dogs).
Depending on the time of the year you can can many of the species of salmon in a single trip. Your Salmon Charter Captain can help you with identifying these fish and direct you on which ones you might want to keep.
As you can see Juneau Alaska Salmon Fishing is some of the most diverse fishing in the work. Along with offering some amazing fishing you will also experience some of the most amazing wildlife viewing anywhere in Alaska. Whales, sealions, and eagles are all part of a typical day on the water.
